The United States and its European allies are taking different paths on Belarus. This split helps Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In May 2026, US President Donald Trump renewed a national emergency over Belarus. The order states that the government of Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko remains an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to US security and foreign policy.
The US approach is firm. But Europe is taking a softer line. This disagreement weakens the Western position.
Lukashenko is a close ally of Putin. Belarus serves as a key base for Russian military operations. A united Western front could pressure Minsk. A divided one gives Moscow room to act.
The result is a clear advantage for Putin. He can now play the US and Europe against each other. This reduces the chances of real change in Belarus.
