A technology worker in Malaysia says his company used his team to train the artificial intelligence (AI) that later replaced them.
The employee, who we will call Sam, worked at a global social media company's office in Kuala Lumpur. For weeks, his team's task was to train the company's AI systems. Soon after, management warned of a "restructuring."
The 29-year-old, who asked for a pseudonym to protect future job prospects, then learned his role was eliminated. "One day, out of nowhere, we had to attend a town hall," Sam said.
He believes the AI he helped build led to the job cuts. "They never explicitly said it was due to AI," Sam noted, "but we all knew."
