Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) can now sell its latest artificial intelligence (AI) chips in China. The U.S. government has granted the company a license under new trade rules.
AMD CEO Lisa Su confirmed the approval. The company will pay a required 15% fee to export its MI308 accelerators. These are high-performance chips critical for developing AI systems.
The decision lets AMD re-enter China's tightly controlled semiconductor market. However, the company may face challenges similar to its rival, Nvidia.
Nvidia previously adapted a chip for the Chinese market, called the H20. Beijing is still investigating whether that chip complies with local regulations. AMD's MI308 could encounter similar regulatory scrutiny from Chinese authorities.
