Trump's Lebanon peace deal collapses within hours

US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah on Monday night, writing on Truth Social: “Let’s see how long that lasts.” Within hours, Israeli drone strikes killed eight people in southern Lebanon, including a father and his two children, and damaged a hospital. Hezbollah continued launching rockets and drones.
Trump pushed for the deal to end Israel’s intensified offensive, which he called an “illegal war” against Iran. Anxious to exit the conflict and with Tehran threatening to suspend peace talks, Trump held an expletive-laden phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The president claimed Hezbollah and Israel had agreed to “stop all shooting.”
But Lebanon’s presidency described a more limited agreement: Israel would not strike Beirut’s southern suburbs if Hezbollah did not attack Israel. The swift breakdown shows the fragility of short-term patches in a volatile region. Civilians on both sides need lasting peace, not temporary pauses.
