The European Parliament has approved two new laws to strengthen the European Union's migration and asylum rules. The vote signals a significant political shift, as the center-right joined with far-right parties to secure passage.
The main center-right group, the European People's Party (EPP), formed a majority with three nationalist and sovereigntist groups. Sovereigntist groups prioritize national independence over EU-wide policy. This alliance bypassed the parliament's traditional coalition, which usually includes left-wing and liberal parties.
The approved legislation is part of a broader EU migration pact. It includes rules for faster screening of arrivals and procedures at the EU's external borders.
The member states of the EU are expected to give their final approval to the laws on December 8. Their justice and interior ministers will meet in Brussels for a Justice and Home Affairs Council.
