A leading Palestinian human rights organization has accused Israeli authorities of planning to assassinate Marwan Barghouti, a prominent political figure imprisoned in Israel. The Palestinian Prisoners’ Society issued the warning, citing what it called alarming and credible intelligence.
Barghouti, a leader of the Fatah party, is serving multiple life sentences in an Israeli prison for his role in deadly attacks during the Second Intifada. Many Palestinians view him as a potential future leader.
The allegations follow a separate claim from Barghouti’s family about his treatment in custody. His son stated that Israeli forces recently assaulted his father, resulting in broken teeth, ribs, and fingers, as well as a partial ear injury.
Israeli officials have not publicly commented on either the alleged assassination plot or the claims of physical abuse. The situation raises tensions amid ongoing conflict and discussions over Palestinian political leadership.
