United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed a new peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. The deal aims to reduce tensions and conflict in central Africa's Great Lakes region.
In a statement, Guterres commended U.S. President Donald J. Trump for brokering the agreement. He also congratulated DRC President Félix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame for reaching this diplomatic milestone.
The UN chief did not disclose specific terms of the deal. However, he expressed hope that it will lead to greater stability. The region has suffered decades of violence involving armed groups.
