A federal judge has ordered the public release of secret grand jury transcripts related to the investigation of financier Jeffrey Epstein in Florida.
U.S. District Judge Rodney Smith issued the ruling on Monday. His brief, two-page order grants a renewed request from the U.S. Department of Justice to unseal the historical documents.
The transcripts are expected to shed light on the 2006 investigation that allowed Epstein to avoid federal charges. He instead pleaded guilty to state prostitution charges and served 13 months in jail.
This decision follows years of public pressure and legal action. Epstein’s case drew renewed scrutiny after his 2019 arrest on new sex trafficking charges and his subsequent death in jail.
The judge has scheduled a hearing for later this month. At that time, he will determine a specific timeline for releasing the documents to the public.
