A wave of fraudulent robocalls is targeting older Americans, with many victims finding their Medicare accounts already breached. Reports of these scam calls are rising sharply across the United States.
The calls often impersonate government agencies or health insurers. Scammers use "spoofed" phone numbers that appear legitimate to gain trust. They then ask for personal information, such as Medicare identification numbers.
Officials warn that criminals use this stolen data to hijack accounts. They can fraudulently bill Medicare for services never provided. In some cases, beneficiaries discover the compromise only when they are wrongly denied coverage.
Authorities urge recipients to hang up immediately on unsolicited calls about Medicare. Legitimate agencies do not request sensitive details over the phone. Beneficiaries should review their Medicare statements regularly for any unauthorized charges.
