Huawei Founder Highlights Diverging U.S. and China AI Strategies

The United States and China are developing artificial intelligence (AI) with fundamentally different goals, according to Ren Zhengfei, founder of Chinese tech giant Huawei. He states the two nations are moving in "different directions," a split reflected in government and corporate strategies. Ren suggests the U.S. is concentrating on massive computing power and large language models. This approach aims for advanced, theoretical goals known as artificial general intelligence (AGI) and artificial superintelligence (ASI). AGI refers to a hypothetical machine with human-like cognitive abilities, while ASI would surpass human intelligence. In contrast, Ren says China is adopting a more practical approach. The focus there is on applying AI directly to enhance specific industries and real-world services. This divergence points to a growing technological divide between the world's two largest economies.
