U.S. President Donald Trump praised the leaders of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda on Thursday as they signed a new peace agreement. The deal aims to end the long-running conflict in eastern DRC and opens the region's critical mineral reserves to U.S. interests.
Presidents Felix Tshisekedi of the DRC and Paul Kagame of Rwanda signed the accord. It specifically seeks to stop the war between the Congolese armed forces and the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group.
However, clashes in eastern Congo continue despite the diplomatic ceremony. The agreement also includes economic provisions for American access to the area's minerals, which are vital for electronics and green technology.
The deal represents a significant U.S.-mediated diplomatic effort. Its success now depends on implementation amid ongoing violence.
