Federal authorities have arrested a man accused of placing pipe bombs in Washington, D.C., on the eve of the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. The Justice Department and FBI announced the arrest but did not immediately release the suspect's name or detailed charges.
The explosives were found near the headquarters of the Democratic and Republican national committees. They were discovered and safely disarmed hours before a mob stormed the U.S. Capitol building.
The investigation, one of the FBI's largest ever, has lasted for more than three years. Officials analyzed massive amounts of digital evidence, including video footage, to identify a suspect.
The accused individual is now in custody and is expected to appear in court soon. The arrest marks a major breakthrough in a case that has remained a top priority for federal law enforcement.
