Alexandra Taxi Association (ATA) Chairman Lulama "Bara" Mayaba was shot and killed by unknown gunmen on Monday. The attack occurred as he left the Dunwoody Shopping Centre with friends. His assassination is the latest in a series of violent deaths targeting taxi industry leaders in the township. Just three days earlier, two other Alexandra taxi officials were murdered. Furthermore, Mayaba's own peace negotiation partner was killed five weeks ago. The murders have intensified fears of escalating conflict within the competitive minibus taxi sector. Mayaba had recently pledged to end the bloodshed, making his killing a severe blow to local stability efforts. Police have opened a murder investigation but have not yet announced any arrests or a confirmed motive for the attack.
