Ukraine has announced a deal to import American natural gas, marking a strategic shift away from Russian energy supplies. The move challenges Moscow's economic influence in Eastern Europe.
President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed last month that Ukraine will buy US liquefied natural gas (LNG). This gas will travel through a pipeline network known as the "Vertical Gas Corridor," originating in Greece.
The agreement is part of a broader American strategy to supply the region. Similar US LNG projects are advancing with Poland and Croatia.
Analysts see these efforts as a plan to eventually replace Russian gas in Central and Eastern Europe. This energy shift could strain long-standing economic ties between Russia and regional partners.
