TikTok to Block Under-16s in Australia Under New Social Media Law

TikTok will block users under 16 from its platform in Australia to comply with a new national law. The rule, which takes effect on December 10, targets major social media and website companies.
In a message to users, TikTok said the required changes "may be upsetting." The company confirmed on Friday it would implement the restrictions when the law begins.
Australia's legislation is the first of its kind globally. It requires platforms to take "reasonable steps" to prevent children under 16 from creating accounts. Companies that fail to comply face fines of up to A$49.5 million (US$32 million).
The law affects several of the world's most popular platforms, including Instagram and YouTube, in addition to TikTok.
