UK Deputy PM Lammy Advocates for Closer EU Trade Ties

UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has stated that leaving the European Union "badly damaged our economy." He made the comment while advocating for a new UK-EU security pact and closer trade relations. Lammy, who is also the Foreign Secretary, said the government seeks a "far better" relationship with the EU. He specifically proposed a new defence and security agreement with the bloc. On trade, Lammy argued for a "more pragmatic approach" to reduce barriers. He suggested aligning UK and EU rules on goods and described a comprehensive customs union as "the only thing that works." These statements signal the new government's priority to rebuild economic and diplomatic ties with Europe. Lammy is currently on a tour of key European capitals to discuss these proposals.
