Germany Moves to Reinstate Voluntary Military Service for Young Adults

The German parliament has approved a plan to reintroduce voluntary military service for 18-year-olds. This significant policy shift aims to strengthen the nation's armed forces. The decision is part of a broader effort to build what officials call "the strongest conventional army in Europe." This goal gained urgency following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which reshaped European security. Under the new model, all young men will receive a questionnaire at age 18. Women can participate voluntarily. Those who express interest will then undergo assessment and can choose a six-month basic service or a longer 23-month specialist role. The program seeks to boost troop numbers and foster greater public connection to the military. Officials state that participation will remain entirely voluntary, with no plans to return to mandatory conscription.
