UN Official Warns of Famine Conditions in Sudan’s Kordofan Region
A senior United Nations official has issued a stark warning that famine is emerging in parts of Sudan’s South Kordofan state. The alert highlights a severe and escalating hunger crisis fueled by ongoing conflict. “Famine conditions have been identified in Kadugli,” said UN spokesperson Jens Laerke during a briefing in Geneva. He stated that civilians in the region are facing growing dangers, including extreme food shortages. The crisis stems from the wider war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Intense fighting has disrupted farming, destroyed markets, and severely limited humanitarian aid access. Famine is a technical classification meaning extreme levels of starvation, disease, and death are present in an area. The UN warning indicates that without urgent intervention, widespread loss of life is imminent. International aid agencies continue to call for safe passage to deliver food and medical supplies. However, continued violence and bureaucratic obstacles are preventing life-saving assistance from reaching those most at risk.
