Australian television host Waleed Aly says a recent religious pilgrimage taught him a lesson about masculinity. His experience directly challenges popular online male influencers. Aly completed the Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. For this, he shaved his head, a required ritual act. He said the humble, uniform appearance of millions of pilgrims made the posturing of some online personalities seem "ridiculous." He specifically criticized the "manosphere." This term refers to a network of online communities that often promote a rigid and aggressive view of masculinity, sometimes called "toxic masculinity." Aly argued that true strength is not about dominance or appearance. Instead, he found it in a shared spiritual experience that requires humility and equality among all participants.
