Wisconsin Lawmaker Warns of Potential Fraud in State Food Aid Program

A Republican congressman is warning that Wisconsin's administration of a federal food aid program could lead to major fraud. He points to a recent scandal in neighboring Minnesota as a cautionary tale. U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany criticized Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, a Democrat. Tiffany said the governor's refusal to permit new audits of the state's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a risk. SNAP, commonly known as food stamps, helps low-income families buy groceries. Tiffany cited a massive fraud case in Minnesota. There, investigators found that $1 billion in pandemic-era food aid was stolen. Federal officials said some of those funds went to terrorist groups, including the militant organization Hamas. The Wisconsin lawmaker argued that without proactive audits, similar large-scale fraud could occur. He accused the Evers administration of "refusing to learn the lesson" from Minnesota's experience. Governor Evers' office has previously defended its oversight of the program. Officials have stated that existing fraud prevention measures are strong and effective.
