A former New York state official on trial for corruption told Chinese contacts that Governor Kathy Hochul was "more obedient" than her predecessor, Andrew Cuomo, federal prosecutors revealed in court.
The allegation emerged in the trial of Linda Sun, who faces charges of acting as an illegal agent for China. Prosecutors accuse Sun of using her government position to spy for Chinese officials.
During opening statements, prosecutors said Sun made the comment about Governor Hochul in communications with her alleged handlers. The claim was presented as evidence of Sun's efforts to provide political analysis to Chinese officials.
Sun has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The trial continues.
