Harvard Professor Agrees to Leave U.S. Following Detention by Immigration Authorities

A Harvard Law School professor has agreed to voluntarily depart the United States after being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The detention followed his arrest for a BB gun incident outside a Boston synagogue. Professor Carlos Portugal Gouvea, a citizen of Brazil, was taken into ICE custody this week. The action occurred after local police arrested him for discharging a BB gun, a type of airgun that fires spherical projectiles, near a synagogue. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE, confirmed the professor's agreement to leave the country. His detention was based on an alleged violation of his non-immigrant visa status. Professor Gouvea's academic status at Harvard University remains unclear. The university has not yet issued a public statement regarding the situation.
