Trump Could Move to Exit USMCA Next Year, Top Trade Official Says

U.S. President Donald Trump may decide in 2025 to withdraw from the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), according to a report by Politico. The news outlet cited comments from U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. In a podcast interview, Greer stated the agreement includes a built-in review period. "The president’s view is he only wants deals that are a good deal," Greer said. "The reason why we built a review period into USMCA was in case we needed to revise it, review it or exit it." The USMCA, which replaced NAFTA, took effect in July 2020. Its key terms are scheduled for a joint review by the three countries in 2026. Greer's remarks suggest the Trump administration could consider unilateral action before that formal process. The potential move underscores the president's focus on renegotiating trade terms he views as unfavorable. The USMCA governs over $1.5 trillion in annual regional trade.
