Australia will ban access to social media platforms for everyone under the age of 16 starting December 10. The new law aims to protect younger teenagers from online harms.
For teenage content creators, however, the ban threatens their hobbies, communities, and future plans. They say it removes a key source of creativity, connection, and potential income.
"I've spent years building an audience and improving my content," one 15-year-old influencer told the BBC. "This feels like it's taking away my purpose."
Another creator described using social media to develop video editing and public speaking skills. They worry the ban will cut off a vital learning tool and creative outlet.
The Australian government has not detailed how platforms will enforce the age restriction. Social media companies are expected to implement age-verification technology.
The global debate continues between protecting young people online and supporting their digital participation. For Australia's teen influencers, the December deadline now defines their online future.
