UN Report Urges Finland to Confront Sami Indigenous Rights Violations

A new United Nations report calls on Finland to urgently address historical and ongoing injustices against its Indigenous Sami population. The findings highlight systemic discrimination that continues to affect the community today. Investigators documented that more than 400 Sami individuals reported being actively discouraged from practicing their culture. Many cited experiences in boarding schools where authorities suppressed Sami language and traditions. The UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples conducted the review. The report stresses that Finland must implement reforms to ensure Sami self-determination and cultural survival. Finnish authorities have acknowledged the report and stated they will examine its recommendations. The government has previously initiated some measures to improve Sami political representation and cultural rights.
