UN Envoy Expresses Hope for Syria's Future After Key Committee Meeting

The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, stated that a recent committee meeting marks a step toward a better future for all Syrians. His remarks followed the ninth session of the Syrian Constitutional Committee in Geneva, which concluded on Monday. The committee, comprising representatives from Syria's government, opposition, and civil society, aims to draft a new constitution. This process is a key part of the UN-led peace effort to end the country's long-running conflict. Pedersen acknowledged the discussions were "long and difficult." However, he noted that delegates engaged in substantive dialogue on constitutional principles for the first time. He urged all parties to build on this progress. The envoy emphasized that a political solution, guided by UN Security Council Resolution 2254, remains the only path to sustainable peace. He called for continued international support to help Syrians determine their own future.
