Meta Platforms Inc. is restructuring its investment strategy within its Reality Labs division, the unit responsible for building the metaverse. The company will now prioritize spending on wearable hardware, such as its upcoming augmented reality (AR) glasses.
This strategic shift does not mean Meta is abandoning its long-term vision for the metaverse. The metaverse refers to a future vision of interconnected virtual worlds. Company leadership reaffirmed its commitment to this goal.
Instead, the move reallocates resources toward near-term, tangible products. Meta believes wearable devices are a critical gateway for users to eventually experience the metaverse.
The restructuring is expected to involve workforce reductions within certain teams at Reality Labs. Meta stated these changes are necessary to streamline operations and control costs while continuing its ambitious long-term project.
