Japan Considers 2026 Increase to International Departure Tax

The Japanese government is considering raising its International Tourist Tax, commonly called the departure tax, starting in fiscal year 2026. It applies to all travelers, both Japanese and foreign, leaving the country by air or sea. The levy was introduced in 2019. Discussions on the potential increase are in early stages. A specific new rate has not been decided. The government plans to finalize its review by the end of this year. The funds from this tax directly support tourism projects.
