Japanese Auto Imports to India Set Record, Driven by Local SUV Production

India is on track to import a record number of vehicles from Japan this year. This surge is primarily driven by two Japanese brands, Honda and Suzuki, which are now shipping India-made SUVs back to their home market. These shipments are classified as imports under trade data because the cars are built in India and then sold in Japan. Industry analysts report that Honda began exporting its India-produced Elevate SUV to Japan in late 2023. Suzuki is also preparing to send its India-made Invicto model. The shift highlights India's growing role as a key manufacturing and export hub for global automakers. Japan's imports of passenger vehicles from India soared over 300% in the first four months of this year compared to 2023. This "reverse import" strategy allows carmakers to benefit from India's competitive production costs and specialized manufacturing capacity. It also meets specific consumer demand in Japan for these SUV models.
