The formal name of former President Donald J. Trump now appears on the sign outside the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) headquarters in Washington, D.C. This change follows a controversial takeover of the institute's board by Trump appointees in 2021.
The USIP is a federally funded, non-partisan organization. Congress created it to promote international conflict resolution and peacebuilding.
The board's new leadership immediately removed several senior staff and institute fellows. A group of these former employees filed a lawsuit to reverse the takeover.
Their case argues that the board's actions violated the institute's legal structure. A court ruling on their attempt to regain control is expected next year.
