Look to the sky on Thursday night for the final supermoon of the year. The full moon will appear about 14% larger and 30% brighter than an average full moon.
This striking effect occurs during a "supermoon," a term for when a full moon coincides with its closest orbital approach to Earth. At this point, called perigee, the moon is nearer to our planet.
The best viewing requires no special equipment. For an optimal experience, find a location with a clear, dark sky away from city lights. The moon will be visible all night as it rises in the east after sunset.
