Massive Great White Shark ‘Contender’ Tracked Off Carolina Coast

A nearly 14-foot-long great white shark named Contender is swimming near the Carolinas, according to satellite tracking data. The non-profit research group OCEARCH first tagged the large male shark to study its migration patterns. Since being tagged, Contender has traveled an impressive 5,000 miles. His current location provides scientists with valuable data on the movement of these large predators. OCEARCH tags sharks with a device that "pings," or transmits a location signal, when the shark's fin breaks the ocean surface. This tracking helps researchers understand migration routes and important habitats for the species.
