The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested a suspect linked to two pipe bombs discovered near the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. This arrest is a significant development in an investigation that has lasted over five years.
Law enforcement found the unexploded devices blocks from the Capitol building on the afternoon of January 6th. This was the same day a crowd stormed the Capitol, but officials have not publicly connected the bombs to that event.
The investigation involved analyzing digital evidence, tip submissions, and video footage. The FBI had previously released images of a person in a hooded sweatshirt, mask, and gloves, who was seen placing the devices.
The arrest concludes a major, unresolved part of the January 6th inquiries. The suspect now faces federal charges related to the placement of an explosive device.
