Ex-Officer Derek Chauvin Seeks New Trial in George Floyd Murder

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has filed a new appeal to overturn his murder conviction. He was found guilty in 2021 for the killing of George Floyd. In new legal documents, Chauvin’s lawyers challenge two parts of the original trial. First, they dispute the medical evidence that said Floyd died from a lack of oxygen. Second, they question testimony from police officials who stated Chauvin’s actions violated his training. This filing is Chauvin’s latest attempt to secure a new trial. His legal team argues that these issues deprived him of a fair verdict. Chauvin is currently serving a more than 20-year prison sentence. The Minnesota Attorney General’s office, which prosecuted the case, is expected to formally respond to the appeal in court.
