Gulf Nations Back Morocco's Claim to Western Sahara

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has reaffirmed its support for Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara. The six-member regional bloc announced its position following a high-level meeting. In a statement, the GCC's Supreme Council said it welcomed a recent United Nations Security Council decision. The Council endorsed a Moroccan-proposed plan for the territory. The plan would grant Western Sahara autonomy under Moroccan rule. Western Sahara is a disputed region in North Africa. Morocco controls most of it, but the Algeria-backed Polisario Front demands full independence. The long-running conflict remains unresolved despite decades of UN mediation. The GCC's declaration reinforces the diplomatic stance of its members, which include Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. These nations consistently support Morocco's territorial claim.
