U.S. Hosts "Final Push" for Congo-Rwanda Peace Talks

U.S. diplomats are making a final attempt to broker peace between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. They will host the presidents of both nations for talks in Washington today. The meeting follows the collapse of African-led peace initiatives. Efforts led by Angola and Kenya failed earlier this year. Each country accused the other of supporting armed groups. The DRC alleges Rwanda backs the M23 rebel militia. Rwanda claims the DRC government shelters the FDLR, a group linked to the 1994 genocide. These mutual accusations have fueled decades of conflict in eastern Congo. U.S. officials now describe their diplomatic intervention as a critical, last-ditch effort to restart dialogue and ease regional tensions.
