UN Warns of Siege Conditions Trapping Civilians in Sudan’s Kordofan Region

The United Nations has issued a stark warning about civilians trapped by fighting in central Sudan. The UN's aid coordination office (OCHA) said on Wednesday that communities across the Kordofan region face extreme hardship under effective siege conditions. Intensifying conflict has severely restricted access to food, water, and medicine. People cannot safely leave these areas, and humanitarian aid cannot get in. OCHA reported that the situation is particularly critical in El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan. The city has seen telecommunications cut and essential supplies run low. This crisis is part of Sudan's wider war, which began in April 2023. The fighting has created one of the world's largest humanitarian emergencies, displacing millions of people.
