A former aide to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim pleaded not guilty to corruption charges on Thursday. The case involves payments linked to a businessman from Sabah, a resource-rich state.
Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, who served as Anwar's political secretary, faces four counts of corruption. Prosecutors accuse him of receiving 176,829.03 ringgit (US$42,930) from the businessman. The businessman also pleaded not guilty to four corresponding charges.
Analysts state the trial threatens to damage Prime Minister Anwar's anti-corruption platform. Anwar came to power promising major government reforms.
The case emerges amid existing tensions over resource rights in Sabah. Sabah is Malaysia's poorest state but contains significant mineral wealth. These disputes had already tested the government's reform agenda.
