Beijing Official Expresses Confidence in Hong Kong's Election and Fire Response

A senior Beijing official in Hong Kong has expressed strong confidence in the city's ability to manage its upcoming Legislative Council election and the aftermath of a recent deadly fire. Liu Guangyuan, deputy director of Beijing's liaison office, said on Thursday that Hong Kong authorities showed the "most responsible attitude" by proceeding with the Sunday election as planned. He stated this decision respects the city's constitutional order. Liu's comments come after a fatal fire in the Tai Po district. He voiced assurance that Hong Kong's government can handle both the election and the fire's aftermath effectively. The Legislative Council election is a key event for Hong Kong, a special administrative region of China. The vote will select members of the city's law-making body.
