The combined wealth of mainland China’s billionaires has surged to nearly US$1.8 trillion, reinforcing their position as the wealthiest group in the Asia-Pacific region. Their fortunes grew 22.2 percent in the year to early 2024, according to a new UBS report.
Key drivers of this growth include Wang Chuanfu, founder of electric-vehicle giant BYD, and the founders of the popular bubble tea chain Mixue. Their rising net worth highlights two powerful sectors in China's economy: technology and consumer retail.
The overall wealth increase stems from a booming technology sector and rising asset prices. The total fortune now stands at US$1.77 trillion.
The report illustrates the rapid accumulation of wealth among China's business elite, even amid broader economic uncertainties. The growth keeps the group ahead of their regional peers.
