This urgent action follows a deadly fire in a residential building last week that killed at least 159 people. The government directive targets nylon mesh sheets used to cover scaffolding. Officials stated this material can trap smoke and intensify fires. They have instructed contractors to replace it with non-combustible metal sheeting instead. The order comes as investigations continue into the blaze at the Wang Fuk Court housing complex. Firefighters faced extreme difficulties reaching victims through the dense smoke and enclosed scaffolding. A government spokesperson called the removal "a precautionary measure" to enhance public safety. The construction industry must complete this change across the city as soon as possible.
