A fraud investigation in Belgium has named former European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini. Prosecutors are examining allegations of favoritism involving EU funds.
The inquiry focuses on a training program at the College of Europe. Mogherini serves as the college's rector, a leadership role similar to a president or dean.
Authorities allege the process for awarding a substantial EU grant showed improper preference for the institution. The investigation seeks to determine if grant rules were broken.
Mogherini has not been formally charged. She led the EU's diplomatic service from 2014 to 2019 and has denied any wrongdoing. The College of Europe stated it is cooperating fully with the investigation.
