Australia Announces $62 Million Military Aid, Sanctions Russian Oil Fleet

The Australian government has unveiled a new $62 million (AUD 100 million) military assistance package for Ukraine. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the aid during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv. The funding will provide short-range air defense systems, drones, and other battlefield necessities. Australia stated this support addresses Ukraine’s most urgent security needs. In a parallel move, Canberra imposed sanctions on 45 additional vessels. These ships form part of what Western nations call Russia’s “shadow fleet,” used to circumvent international oil price caps. This dual action reinforces Australia’s commitment to supporting Ukraine and pressuring Russia’s economy. The government says it will continue to work with allies to counter the invasion.
