The U.S. Institute of Peace has been officially renamed the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace. The White House announced the change as part of a broader effort to dismantle the agency.
A State Department statement praised the President as "the greatest dealmaker in American history." It credited his administration with securing several international diplomatic agreements.
Established by Congress in 1984, the institute is an independent federal institution. Its mission is to prevent and resolve violent conflicts around the world.
The renaming coincides with plans to close the institute and move its functions. These functions will be absorbed into the U.S. State Department.
