The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) say they have captured the city of Babanusa in western Sudan. They announced the seizure on Monday after a prolonged siege.
In their claim, the RSF stated they also took control of the headquarters for the Sudanese Army's 22nd Infantry Division. The base had been described as the last major stronghold for the regular Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) in West Kordofan state.
The battle for Babanusa is part of the wider conflict between the SAF and the RSF. The two former allies have been fighting for control of Sudan since April 2023.
There was no immediate independent confirmation of the RSF's claim. The Sudanese Army has not yet issued a public statement on the status of Babanusa.
