The European Commission has proposed two new plans to secure long-term financial support for Ukraine. This move comes as current U.S. aid is set to end.
One plan would use a special loan for Ukraine, funded by profits from frozen Russian central bank assets. The other involves the EU issuing joint debt, backed by the common EU budget.
Both proposals face political hurdles. The governments of Belgium and Hungary have expressed opposition to the plans.
EU leaders will debate the options at a summit on December 18 and 19. The goal is to ensure stable funding for Ukraine continues without interruption.
