Steve Cropper, Architect of the Memphis Soul Sound, Dies at 81

Steve Cropper, the guitarist and songwriter who helped define the "Memphis Soul" genre, has died. He was 81. Cropper was a foundational member of both the house band and the production team at Stax Records. This label was a major force in rhythm and blues (R&B) during the 1960s and 1970s. His work had two key parts. First, he played guitar in the instrumental group Booker T. & the MG's. Their crisp, rhythmic sound became the backbone for countless Stax recordings. Second, Cropper worked as a producer and songwriter. He co-wrote classic songs like "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" and "In the Midnight Hour." His combined efforts in the studio and on stage were crucial to the rise of Stax and its signature sound.
