An 8-year-old California girl died in a head-on collision last week. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) says the suspected driver was previously ordered to leave the country.
ICE identified the suspect as a citizen of Mexico. The agency stated he had a final order of removal, meaning a judge had ruled he must be deported. He also has a history of charges for driving under the influence (DUI), or operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
Local police arrested the man at the crash scene. He now faces potential charges related to the fatal collision.
ICE has requested that local law enforcement hold the suspect. The agency plans to take him into federal custody for removal proceedings if he is ever released from local detention.
