Trade experts and industry leaders are urging the United States to prioritize economic security against China. They made the call during a key government hearing ahead of a major review of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative held the public session on Wednesday. It is the first of three days of testimony from more than 140 business, advocacy, and policy representatives.
Witnesses advocated for a joint USMCA mechanism to address shared concerns. They view the upcoming July 2026 review of the trade pact as a critical opportunity for North America to present a unified front.
The push centers on using the regional trade bloc to counter challenges posed by China. These include threats to supply chains and national security from unfair trade practices.
The hearings will help shape the U.S. position for the formal review process. Officials are gathering input on how to modernize the five-year-old agreement.
