India has begun construction on a massive new industrial center dedicated to semiconductor manufacturing. The project, named ‘Semicon City,’ will be built in the state of Gujarat. Officials aim to make it the core of the country’s growing chipmaking sector.
The government will invest approximately $1.25 billion in the first phase of development. This funding will provide roads, power, and water to the 100-square-kilometer site. The prepared land is intended to attract major global chip companies and their suppliers.
This initiative is a key part of India’s $10 billion semiconductor incentive program. The program offers financial support to companies that build chip fabrication plants, or “fabs,” in the country. By creating this specialized hub, India hopes to reduce its reliance on imported semiconductors.
Establishing a domestic chip industry is a major strategic goal for many nations. Semiconductors are essential components in everything from smartphones to cars. India’s ‘Semicon City’ represents a significant step in its plan to become a key player in the global electronics supply chain.
